Egypt is one of the best places in the world for water sports. Explore the underwater paradise of the Red Sea with some snorkelling or scuba diving, or go wet and wild with kiteboarding and windsurfing.
The Red Sea is one of the best diving spots in the world. With crystal clear water, beautiful reefs and colourful aquatic life, scuba diving is one of the most rewarding water sports.
Hurghada offers plenty of opportunity to have a go at scuba diving but the best way to experience it is to take a day out to go diving, learning all the basics and seeing as much of this stunning underwater world as possible.
A day’s lessons start from £30 per person and can be done at numerous diving schools around Hurghada.
If you’d rather something a little more tame than scuba diving but still want to see the stunning underwater paradise of Hurghada, have a try at snorkelling.
One of the best snorkelling excursions takes you to the desert island paradise of natural park Giftun Island, where you’ll have the chance to see colourful fish, coral and even swim with the friendly dolphins . After a 45 minute boat ride across the clear blue waters, kit up in your rented snorkelling gear and dive on in. Many of these snorkelling tours offer lunch on board the boat and the chance to see some of Hurghada’s incredible landscapes.
Snorkelling boat excursions start from £24 per person.
If you’re after something extreme, try kiteboarding. Colona Watersports is one of the safest centres around Hurghada, with the biggest beach (12 hundred metres) consisting of flat water and areas of choppy waves perfect for learning. Located directly on the Swiss Inn Magawish beach, Colona has an impressive shallow area for beginners and separate areas for the more advanced.
Feel safe and learn all the basics with Colona’s IKO qualified instructors, and go for a quick lesson or commit to a four day session, after which you’ll be able to go solo.
Three hour lessons at Colona start at 130 euros.
Planet Windsurf windsurfing school is based at the Mecure Hotel and offers lessons and training to beginners or intermediate windsurfers. This experienced and professional team offers private or group lessons where you can learn this exhilarating water sport.
The best time to go windsurfing is from March to November, with the best winds seen in summer, from June to October.
Try a two hour lesson to cover the basics or pay around £190 for 10 hours, after which you can go it alone.
