Birdwatching

Cayo Coco is an excellent region to indulge in a spot of birdwatching, and there really is almost anywhere you can go in the area to get away from the other tourists and take some time to stroll through the countryside. Taking your trusty pair of binoculars with you, you’ll be able to catch sight of Roseate Spoonbills, Green-tailed Towhees and Cuban Pygmy-Owls, so remember to take your best camera as well so that you have some great shots to frame and put on your wall at home. Due to the need to be quiet and calm so as not to disturb the birds, you’ll find that this is an excellent way to relax, and that you can explore much of the Cayo Coco region with this one activity.

Diving and snorkelling

Another great way to relax is to partake in some diving or snorkelling by just about any of the Cayo Coco beaches. The Melia Cayo Coco hotel is a good place to start as this is where an excellent Dive Centre is based, and from here you can explore the coral reefs to your heart’s content once your out in the water. There’s something altogether soothing about watching schools of fish drift by in an underwater world which, here, seems so much more peaceful than the land above.

Parque Natural el Bagá

The Parque Natural el Bagá is a trip back to the natural habitat of the indigenous peoples to the region, with several lagoons and natural forest areas to explore. You can let your mind wander as you move in and out of mangroves as the local iguana inhabitants amble along next to you. While you can tour the area by yourself, it’s worth asking whether your hotel runs or arranges tours, as they can allocate a guide to ensure that you get the full feel and experience of the Park.

Playa Flamenca

Playa Flamenca is home to several beaches which you can lie back and relax upon, with Cala Mosca and Cala Estaca two of the more tourist-friendly. However, there are also a number of other activities to relax with in the area, home as it is to a number of golf courses and some great places to grab a long, relaxed lunch. Playa Flamenca is on the southernmost Costa Blanca in the Orihuela Costa region, should this region take your fancy. To escape the crowds, you could also take a wander along the coastline to Punta Prima in the north, or Cabo Roig in the south.
