The best routes to cycle in Tenerife
Tenerife is a big island and it varies widely from the north to south, so we propose two different routes – the climb from Playa de Las Teresitas to El Bailadero riding through Anaga Mountains and secondly the Valley of Masca.
Los Cristianos to El Medano
Mostly flat and easy – takes around 3hrs
Start the route in Los Cristianos, cycling next to the sea, through Las Galletas, Guargacho and Los Abrigos before stopping in Playa La Tejita in the Chiringuito Pirata. After this stop continue to El Medano, a famous place for kite and windsurfing so it can be a little windy! After this return back to Los Cristianos.
Santa Cruz to El Bailadero
Distance – 28 kilometers
Quite hilly takes around 2 hours
Moving to the north of the island, starting in the capital Santa Cruz, riding 10 flat kilometers to Playa de las Teresitas and then a steep climb 14km to El Bailadero. Enjoy some well earned lunch with marvelous views. This route involves a lot of climbing but you will be well rewarded with the views at the top.
Guided cycling tours in Tenerife
We did our cycling tours with Canary Bike Tours. They are passionate about cycling and offer you the opportunity to cycle without the complication of transporting their own bike. They have high quality bikes to hire and very professional guides that know the best routes on the island.
They also have clothes, helmets, medical assistance and everything you need to have a fantastic experience riding in Tenerife.
Bringing a bike on-board a Thomas Cook Airlines flight
If you bring your own bike you can just get a guide or simply find your own way around the island. You are allowed 30kg for bikes on our flights, prices start at £40 but check our sports and baggage page for full details. We also advise to book your bike more than 30 days in advance which is cheaper than booking less than 29 days before your flight.
The best months to cycle in Tenerife
Tenerife is a perfect place to ride, you can enjoy cycling all year round. In the south (Los Cristianos) the average temperature is 20ºC, so in winter months when the weather in Europe is cold and wet, why not escape for some winter sun!
In the north it rains a bit in winter and the temperature is a little cooler, so you´ll need a rain jacket and some warm clothes, still better than the UK though!
