Moussaka is a traditional Greek dish made of sautéed aubergine or potato and mincemeat, served like a casserole. Moussaka varies depending on region but if you want a seriously tasty version, Kalamata is where it’s at.

Lalagia are crunchy strips of dough made with citrus zest and spices like cinnamon – seriously addictive! Typically eaten around Christmas, these tasty treats can be found in bakeries all around Kalamata. Lalagia is often served with sfela, a hard, salty cheese and Kalamata olives, or with ouzo for a perfect drinking snack.
Al Pastor
Served much like a doner kebab, Al Pastor is salty, smoked pork cut in thin slices and added to pitta bread with vegetables, often with a spicy chili dressing.
Luna Lounge in Kalamata is first and foremost a wine bar, with a huge selection including local varieties and supposedly the best coffee in town. The food is more reserved for lunches but doesn’t fail to impress, and the Al Pastor pork comes heavily recommended.

Number one on this list would have to be the Kalamata Olive. These eponymous olives are a dark purple, almost black colour, plump and juicy, and eaten worldwide. Locally grown in Kalamata, they are usually offered as mezze starters or snacks, served whole, pitted or in halves.
