10 must haves for your hand luggage

Suitcase packing

Having travelled extensively over the past 15 years of my life, packing has become a bit of an art form.  When it comes to hand luggage, it’s taken a long time to get the right balance of what you need on board and what you will most likely not even think of.

So here’s my top 10 items I can’t do without when flying:-

1. Pain relievers and decongestants

Cabin pressure can cause headaches if you are particularly prone to them, and the air conditioning can cause congestion so having these on hand is a must.  You can take these through security no problem, but don’t worry if you forget, they can also be purchased air side.

2. Hand sanitiser

If you’re anything like me, the thought of any kind of germ fills you with horror – remember to bring travel size only (under 100ml).

3. Tissues/wet wipes

Whether you have a child or not wet wipes are a god send, and can be used for pretty much anything.

4. Reusable Pastic baggies

These have so many uses! and not just for your liquids.  Use them to keep pens and pencils together for little ones, unwanted rubbish and used wet wipes, unfinished snacks that you want to keep fresh… the possibilities are endless.

5. Change of clothes

When accidents happen, whether it’s food related (I spill food more than my 2 year old son) or you feel like you have been in your clothes just that little to long, having spares is a relief!

Pack a thin t-shirt and leggings/shorts depending on the current climate of your destination, you will be so glad you did!

6. Compression socks

Compression stockings are specially designed to apply pressure to your lower legs, helping to maintain blood flow, and reduce discomfort and swelling. They are also great for your general comfort when moving around the cabin and getting extra comfortable for a film or nap.

They may even be prescribed by your GP if you have a condition that causes poor blood flow in your legs, such as swollen and enlarged veins.

7. Earbuds or noise-cancelling headphones

Pure bliss! block out the engine noise with some good quality noise-cancelling headphones – essantial for films, music and naps.

8. Downloaded Media

Don’t forget to download any content you may want to watch on the plane before you leave the house – especially if you’re currently binge watching the latest must see series.

9. Notebook and Pen

Old school, but still essential for all my long haul flights – you never know when a pen and some paper might come in handy.

10. Comfortable Hoodie/Jumper

Last but not least! it can get cold on flights due to temperature regulation and other factors so it’s a great comfort to have your favourite hoodie/jumper handy – or you’re favourite blankie – whatever makes you happy 😉
